Advancing Labour Migration Governance and Protecting Workers' Rights in Africa

Contributing to improved labour migration governance and the protection of migrant workers' rights through enhanced social dialogue, trade union cooperation, and advocacy

The African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa), in partnership with the ILO Bureau for Workers' Activities (ACTRAV), Better Regional Migration Management (BRMM) Programme, Joint Labour Migration Program, and the Africa Forum on GFMD, hosted the African Trade Union Migration Network (ATUMNET) conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from December 18th to 20th, 2023. Focusing on contributing to improved labour migration governance and the protection of migrant workers' rights through enhanced social dialogue, trade union cooperation, and advocacy, the meeting brought together various stakeholders, including ATUMNET focal persons, CSOs in Africa, Diaspora organisations, Migrant workers, Trade Union organisations from Asia and Arab regions, Media persons, Youth, ITUC-Africa and ILO.

Preparation for the 2024 African Regional Review of the Global Compact on Migration (GCM) and deepened engagement in the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) were key discussion areas. During the three-day meeting, participants collaboratively developed actionable plans and initiatives to address common challenges related to the network's objectives. The meeting catalysed building stronger partnerships among ATUMNET members and laying the foundation for sustained cooperation in the future. Moreover, the shared commitment among stakeholders demonstrated the network's capacity to act cohesively in advancing its mission.

Moreover, the meeting facilitated an exchange of experiences and expertise contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by the network's members. Through this knowledge-sharing platform, participants gained valuable insights into effective strategies and innovative approaches employed by others in similar contexts. The outcome highlighted the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration as key drivers for the success of ATUMNET.

The outcomes underscored the commitment of stakeholders to work collectively and fostering a sense of shared responsibility and unity in addressing the challenges within the region. The meeting's success is indicative of ATUMNET's potential to make a sustainable impact on the issues at hand through strengthened cooperation and coordinated efforts.
